Abstract

The university is a privileged space for socialization where young people not only acquire academic knowledge but also consolidate their gender identity through everyday interaction. However, communication among peers doesn’t always meet the expectations of today’s society. This article aims to share the results of a diagnosis of everyday communication practices among university students aged 18 to 24, based on gender studies. The study was theoretically grounded in research by authors such as Butler (performativity), Lagarde (the multidimensionality of gender), Connell (hegemonic masculinities), and Hill Collins (intersectionality). These studies were combined with a critical analysis of the Cuban regulatory framework and its homogenizing limitations. The methodology combined observation, interviews, and content analysis. The results obtained revealed everyday communication practices that reproduced gender stereotypes, subtle sexism, and sexist language in the selected sample, highlighting a disconnect between formal talks about equality and informal macho dynamics. This training gap called for educational spaces that link theory and practice to develop critical communication skills with an intersectional gender perspective.
