Nutritional supplements in the management of polycystic ovary syndrome. Literature review

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a chronic endocrine disorder that affects women of reproductive age. It is characterized by anovulation, hyperandrogenism, and insulin resistance, which increases hyperinsulinemia and affects lipid metabolism, thereby increasing the risk of ovarian cysts and hormonal disturbances. Nutritional supplements are emerging as novel adjuvant treatment techniques for women diagnosed with this syndrome. The aim of this article is to conduct a literature review of the last 5 years of articles published in the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and ScieLO databases associated with this topic. A documentary review was used to collect information. The main finding was that nutritional supplements play a key role in the management of this disease. Myo-inositol improves insulin sensitivity, regulates the menstrual cycle, and improves egg quality; vitamin D and calcium act on menstrual regularity and follicular development; omega-3 fatty acids reduce insulin resistance and improve the lipid profile; and finally, there is evidence of decreased microbiota in women with PCOS. Although there is consensus on the potential benefits of certain supplements in the management of PCOS, opinions vary regarding their relative efficacy and optimal combinations, so further studies are needed.
