This study evaluated the impact of the inclusion of barley concentrate as an alternative to antibiotics in diets for newly weaned piglets, analyzing its effect on intestinal health and productive performance. Eighty-four 45-day-old piglets were used, randomly divided into two groups: a control group with a diet supplemented with antibiotics and an experimental group with a diet based on barley concentrate. For 46 days, productive parameters such as daily weight gain (DWG), feed intake (FI), and feed efficiency (FE), as well as intestinal health indicators, including incidence and severity of diarrhea, and intestinal villi morphology, were evaluated. The results showed that piglets fed barley had a lower incidence of diarrhea (P<0.001), maintaining the height of the intestinal villi and the depth of the crypts at levels similar to the control group (P>0.05). No significant differences in ADG or EA were observed between the groups (P>0.05), while ADC was higher in the experimental diet during the first week due to its greater palatability. These findings highlight the potential of barley concentrate as a sustainable and effective alternative to the use of antibiotics in pig production, promoting intestinal health without compromising productive performance.
