The French language and its regional variants. A view from sociolinguistics
Keywords:
Linguistics, language, vocabulary, idiomatic expressions.Abstract
A group of regional variants of French converge in French language teaching, enriching and simultaneously complicating it. French, like other languages, is nuanced by the influence of various languages, and everything from pronunciation to the most insignificant expressions, not to mention vocabulary, is markedly influenced by its speakers, depending on their education, social background, and age group. Geographic location plays a fundamental role, as it fosters a language conditioned by the languages that surround them. For this article, an extensive specialized bibliography was consulted, information was triangulated, and the author's on-site observations were also taken into account, during work or study trips to some of the aforementioned Francophone contexts. The study demonstrates how the French language, although it has a rigid grammatical system strongly defended by academia, is not a homogeneous language and could have as many variants as there are Francophone geographical areas. This document is an effective reference material for participants in the Master's Degree in Foreign Language Teaching, as well as for fourth-year students of the same program, and for anyone who decides to delve into learning or deepening their knowledge of a language as beautiful as it is difficult.
