Order Caballero de la Luz and the confrontation with the Batista dictatorship (1953-1958). Notes

Abstract

The Cuban historiography has paid special attention to the confrontation with the Batista dictatorship from national, regional and local perspectives. Although the Marxist-Leninist underpinning of most of the studies carried out has made the class analysis of these events possible, investigations into the work of revolutionary organizations have predominated, which limits the understanding of the social scope of these struggles. Consequently, the objective was pursued to reveal the position of the Orden Caballero de la Luz around the Batista dictatorship (1953-1958). The study revealed that, although the leading organizations of the fraternal association maintained a conservative political position, its membership adopted a position of support for the revolutionary cause, with some of them joining the main revolutionary organizations. The research was based on the analysis of documents produced and treasured by the fraternal association and the subsequent systematization of that information with that provided by the historiographic production about the period under study.
