As a result of the challenges brought about by the rapid rise of Generative Artificial Intelligence at a societal level, with a strong focus on higher education, it is necessary to shift the focus from the use of Digital Technologies to this specific field. Therefore, this article aimed to carry out an exploratory study which, based on conducting a diagnosis, would provide specific information on the level of knowledge, use, and perceptions regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in teaching and research processes by professors and students at the University of Holguín. For the research development, a mixed approach with a concurrent design was used to interpret the results of two surveys. The main finding was that, although the current situation is not yet ideal, there are positive signs showing strong interest from students and the university faculty, who recognize the value of using Artificial Intelligence and the need to ensure training in this field of knowledge and its ethical use. It is concluded that it is an urgent need to develop a policy for the use of these tools in university processes, to include content for the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence and its ethical and responsible use in the curriculum of all degrees, as well as in postgraduate studies and in the updating of university faculty.
