Behavior of breast cancer at the Ernesto Guevara Hospital in Las Tunas

Abstract

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer incidence and mortality in adult women in Latin America and the world. Therefore, this article aims to characterize the behavior of breast cancer in the General Teaching Hospital Dr. Ernesto Guevara de La Serna, in the period from September 2020 to December 2023. In this sense, the behavior of this disease is described according to: age, tumor location, reason for consultation, reproductive risk factors and anatomopathological characteristics; the surgical management used is defined, taking into account whether the surgical treatment was primary or secondary, the technique used, as well as the complications that occurred. A descriptive, prospective study was carried out. The universe consisted of 227 patients who were treated in this hospital and the sample consisted of 218 women who met the inclusion criteria. The results were discussed and the following conclusions were reached: breast cancer most frequently affects women over 60 years of age, most of them come for consultation because they present a palpable mass in the breast, the left breast and the upper external quadrant are most frequently affected, most of the patients received primary surgical treatment, and more than half of them underwent modified radical mastectomy, the main complication being seroma of the surgical wound and most of them were affected by ductal carcinoma.
