Abstract

The present article aimed to evaluate the effects of biochar produced from horse manure, complemented with 10 t ha⁻¹ of semi-composted manure, on soil physical properties and the yield of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) crops. The research was conducted on an Agro-genic Reddish Brown Fersialitic soil in the northern area of Las Tunas, Cuba, between July and November 2023. A randomized block design with three replicates and two doses of biochar (40 and 80 t ha⁻¹) was used. Bulk density and total and aeration porosity, as well as morphophysiological variables, yield components, and the final crop yield, were determined. The results indicated that the combined application of biochar and manure reduced bulk density and significantly increased porosity. Likewise, the use of these organic amendments favored plant height, the number of capsules, and the weight of 1000 seeds. Sesame yield reached values of 1.98 and 1.40 t ha⁻¹ with doses of 80 and 40 t ha⁻¹, respectively. It is concluded that the use of biochar and equine manure comprehensively improves the physical properties of the soil and crop productivity, establishing itself as a sustainable strategy for the restoration of degraded soils.
