Abstract

Establishing exact malnutrition criteria in the context of an intensive care unit is very difficult. The objective of this article is determining the relationship between the nutritional status and the evolution of seriously ill patients hospitalized in the intensive care service of the “Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna” from Las Tunas. A descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study was carried out, the universe was made up of 942 admitted patients, the sample was selected from simple random sampling for 95% confidence and consisted of 401 patients. The chi-square statistical test was used to evaluate the association between the variables of interest. To evaluate the agreement between the CONUT scales and other variables, it was necessary to convert the four CONUT categories into two: high risk and low risk, according to the malnutrition alert classification of the instrument itself. Males predominated and patients between 60 and 79 years old. Respiratory diseases were the main causes of admission to intensive care. In general, more than 70% of the cases presented a normal nutritional status. A significant statistical association was found between nutritional status and stay of more than 14 days.
