Abstract

Educational epistemicide in Mexico: the systematic eradication of indigenous knowledge and its impact on the construction of identityEducational epistemicide in Mexico represents a historical and systematic phenomenon that has marginalized and suppressed indigenous knowledge, languages and cosmovisions within the formal educational system. This article analyzes how hegemonic educational policies have perpetuated the devaluation of ancestral knowledge, contributing to the loss of cultural identity and the reinforcement of colonial structures. Through a critical approach and a qualitative analysis based on documentary review and case studies, five thematic axes are explored: 1) the coloniality of knowledge in education, 2) the imposition of a monocultural curriculum, 3) the marginalization of indigenous languages, 4) the role of teachers as reproducing agents of epistemicide, and 5) the resistance and educational alternatives from indigenous communities. The study concludes that educational epistemicide not only hinders the intergenerational transmission of indigenous knowledge, but also restricts the possibility of building a truly inclusive, intercultural and decolonial education.
