Abstract

The present research aimed to analyze the evolution of the common hacienda as a type of property, as well as its influence on the development, not only economic, but also socio-political of the jurisdiction of Santa Clara. Objective: Analyze the impact of the common hacienda in the jurisdiction of Santa Clara on the socioeconomic and political evolution of the jurisdiction. Materials and methods: The theoretical-conceptual basis was based on the theory and method of regional and local history. Historical-logical, analytical-synthetic, inductive-deductive, analogical-comparative theoretical methods were used, as well as empirical analysis of documents. Results: In 1689 the town of Santa Clara was founded, separate from that of San Juan de los Remedios; as a product precisely of the fight for control of the land and its resources, with the appearance of new interest groups, as was the case that was studied. Smuggling constituted a bridge that linked the interior and exterior of Cuban space through coastal piers and waterways. This function was considered to be triggered by the rigid single port policy, so this became the way or “solution” to colonial monopolistic limitations. Conclusions: The existence of large estates, with significant functions within the economy, allowed the study of the estate phenomenon in the jurisdiction, such as the cases of Antón Díaz and Manicaragua.
