Abstract

The issue under investigation reveals scarce and disorganized information about the presence of the helminths Toxascaris leonina and Spirometra spp. in the ocelot (Leopardus pardalis); this hinders the implementation of effective plans for the conservation and management of this Neotropical feline. The main aim of the study was to identify, through a literature review, the epidemiological impact of these parasites on Leopardus pardalis. The topic stands out in the ecological and health spheres because these parasitic infections could cause serious health problems for the host, even death; moreover, the cestode Spirometra spp. shows an increasing zoonotic risk, which underscores the need for a 'One Health' perspective linking animal and human health. A systematic literature review of a qualitative nature with an exploratory-descriptive approach was carried out. Primary criteria were used when selecting the information, covering research on the prevalence, distribution, and impact of these parasites, updated data regarding diagnosis, life cycle, transmission, and clinical implications in the ocelot and other neotropical felines, which provided greater scientific validity. The results show that the conditions of captivity favor the transmission and persistent prevalence of Toxascaris leonina. At the same time, habitat fragmentation and human proximity increase the zoonotic risk associated with Spirometra spp. The findings highlight the urgent need for comprehensive epidemiological monitoring and parasite control programs for these cats.
