This article analyzes pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE), with the purpose of explaining its main characteristics and how to proceed appropriately in its treatment. It is a complication of high frequency and very difficult to diagnose in the hospital setting that usually emerges associated with other types of pathologies. It can be considered as the clinical expression resulting from the interlocking of one or more thrombi in the pulmonary arteries coming from the venous system. It is one of the most important problems in cardiopulmonary pathology and in medicine in general. It is considered as such because of its high prevalence and complex morbidity and mortality, and requires multidisciplinary medical care involving intensivists, cardiologists and surgeons.
